I love when kids come to me at the park and just hand me some gross old bones they found in their yard and go “You. Identify this.”

90% of the time it’s a raccoon, but one time it was a domestic cat skull. I can identify some on sight, but I prefer to drag kids over to the computer and show them comparative pictures of different kinds of bones and make them identify shared features and key differences so that THEY can figure out what kind bone it is and go home feeling like Sherlock Bones.

@keptin-indy Oh man I haven’t had that experience YET but I know it happens a lot.

Mostly I’ve had deeply disturbed visitors report “horribly mutilated animals” that are “covered in gore” but when I go to check it out it’s like… just very lightly-scavenged deer that a fox might have gotten to. It’s weird to think how quickly we’ve become a society that eats meat nearly every day and yet so many people have never seen An Entrail up close.
